To take your gloves off
When women in the South take off their white gloves, it means they speak their mind. This is clearly a take-off on the idiom “To take the gloves off” which refers to freeing your emotions to proceed with energy and focus on whatever it is you are doing.
At the recent Women’s March in New York City, this lady in our parade pen posed for us with her white boxing gloves. What a fitting image to contemplate. Even though traditionally when a boxer takes off the gloves, the intention is to inflict even more damage on the opponent, wouldn’t you agree that this women gives a stronger impression of spunk and determination by keeping them on?
