Brown Cow

Growing up, this was my favorite dessert which my maternal grandmother would make for us when we visited her on our vacations.  The classic version is made with vanilla ice cream and root beer as a float. It is summarily the easiest possible summer dessert to make. Even a child can make this.

There is a low level of controversy, however, as some people claim it is made with chocolate ice cream and root beer.  My grandmother would substitute Coke, but it wasn’t the same. When Martha Stewart got into the act, she made the classic recipe but tarted it up with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and sprinkles. Honestly, Martha.  Just leave it alone!

By the way, August 6th is “National Root Beer Day’ so plan on making a Brown Cow and celebrating with the rest of us Root Beer lovers.

Ingredients:

Vanilla ice cream

Root beer

A metal straw (more PC than a plastic one)

Directions:

1.       Put one generous scoop of vanilla ice cream in a tall glass.

2.       Add Root beer to the top.  Keep a bottle on hand so that guests can top off their float.

3.       Add a straw.

4.       If you want to be fancy, serve with a French Crêpe Wafer Cookie from Trader Joe’s.
